About The Visionary & the Vision
LIFE Integrating Farm Education
Project MOTHER, Inc. founded in 1996 and established in 2014 as a 501(c)3-woman, minority-owned company is located in the rural Chase City, VA 23924 area on a five-acre property known as “Legacy Acres” on Hunters Lane. MOTHER is an acronym for Millennium Opportunities to Heal, Educate and Rehabilitate. Build A LIFE Workshop is a subsidiary of Project MOTHER, Inc. LIFE is an acronym for Life Integrating Farm Education. Both constituents are educational and hands-on enterprise projects. Build a LIFE is a NEW educational and hands-on enterprise project, established less than two years. Our focus is on gardening and developing livestock. Based in Chase City, Virginia, the farm is owned and operated by Professor Dr. Gloria Barksdale, an African-American woman, middle & high-school educator, author, project manager, and college professor with over 40 years of non-consecutive successful farming and teaching experience. To date, she single-handedly has materially and substantially participated in the full operation of the farm. Officially identified as Farm 8067, Tract 17383, Legacy Acres has her Wetland Determination Certification and is part of the District Lake Country SWCD recognized by the Boydton USDA Service Center. We are in the Fifth Congressional District also known as Southside Virginia. The small neighboring communities that are tightly connected within a 10-mile radius in Mecklenburg County include 8 census tracts, 6 of which are rural. Legacy Acres is in Mecklenburg County, five miles from Chase City, Virginia, and five miles from Boydton, Virginia.
The “Greater Works” Vision: This new venture on Legacy Acres is needed to design a program providing classroom training and hands-on farm experience to address four priority areas: (1) to assist a minimum of three, currently committed, local socially-disadvantaged entities in growing food banks with fresh produce (2) to create a fully functioning farm to include cows, goats, lambs and horses; (3) to introduce agricultural education targeting a minimum of 10 qualifying minority youth or 5 beginning socially-disadvantaged farmers/ranchers annually specifically in the rural Chase City, VA area and (4) to provide farm therapy to military, seniors and juveniles in need of an outlet of hope. This project will provide opportunities beginning with those participants surrounding the areas off Highways 92, 47, and 49 within a 20-mile radius initially staying within the 23924, 23915, and 23917 zip codes. These zip codes include Chase City, Boydton, and Baskerville in the closest proximity to Legacy Acres, with a desire to include the 23970 (South Hill) and 23927 (Clarksville) within the next two years.
